Video: Greenwood Shrink Pot–In Depth Version

Danielle Rose Byrd creates a shrink pot from start to finish and explains the process along the way

Making shrink pots is a great, straightforward green woodworking project that relies on the magic of wet-dry joinery. After hollowing a wet round, you let it shrink as it loses moisture, trapping a dry solid-wood bottom within. I love the intersection of utility and beauty, so the limitless options that shrink pots present are very appealing to me. They’re commonly used to hold dry goods, pencils, candy, cat treats (at least for me), and other knickknacks. Also, once dry, they’re great vessels for exploring design options such as colors, textures, and chip carving. Shrink pots are part of a home, and I think they should reflect some of that personality.

There are two versions of this video. If you’re looking for a quiet process-oriented video, you can find it here.

Now THIS is why I subscribe to FW! An amazing woodworker showing us her craft in her own words. Great use of hand tools, superior craftsmanship, and best of all, it includes more than a little artistry.

FW editors, you have your marching orders: create 1 million more videos featuring woodworkers/artists like Danielle Rose Byrd. Snap to it!

I watched the silent version of th is video before I watched this one. I enjoyed both, but this one is even better . I enjoyed listening to the crafter explain her methods of work and I also enjoyed seeing samples of her earlier work.

I have made many hundreds of boxes, but never a shrink pot. Now, I am tempted to try. Thanks!

      P.S. Love the auger!

Whats beautiful about Danielle/Peter and David is you see their quiet passion and focused skill as they work green wood into Chairs/Bowls and now Shrink Pots. Thus getting back to the true nature of the craft and growing to artistic qualities that are the hallmark of FW Magazine and video presentations.

Outstanding production in all respects. Well done, Daniel and FWW.
