    Shop storage solutions

The number of cool shop storage articles and videos in the Fine Woodworking arsenal is astounding. Here are just a few to get you thinking about where you can make some additions or improvements.

Even though a first glance in my shop might lead one to believe otherwise, I am a firm supporter of working in a tidy, efficient way. Everything should have a place, and, theoretically, everything should go in that place as soon as you’re finished using it. I spend a lot of time in other people’s shops; it’s definitely a perk of the job. And while everybody’s layout and tools are different, the one thing all the shops I visit have in common is that they are organized and set up in a way that lets the individual user work as efficiently and easily as possible. Being creative with your storage solutions is the key.

Although you can’t change everything at once, there are things you can do or make along the way to help you get specific tasks done more quickly and efficiently. Why not spend the time setting up that infrastructure so the next time you need it it’s ready to go?

The number of cool shop storage articles and videos in the Fine Woodworking arsenal is astounding. Here are a few to get you thinking about where you can make some additions or improvements.

Fine-tune your shop by Jerry Lyons

Longtime furniture maker and teacher Jerry H. Lyons shares efficient workshop solutions developed for his dream shop—a converted 3,000-sq.-ft. log cabin in Kentucky. Lyons offers detailed plans for a rolling assembly cart, a wall panel that organizes hand tools, a clamping table to aid with large-scale glue-ups, and a multifunction mobile table for use as an outfeed table or workstation.

Hand tools are kept close at hand with hanging panels by Jason Stephens

Jason Stephens learned woodworking in the U.S. Army, and it was in the Army that he also learned the importance of having a secure but movable tool storage system. His hanging-panel-based solution incorporates custom hangers for each tool with easy, one-handed access. Used for both hand tools and machine accessories, these movable panels keep his tools organized and within reach no matter where he’s working. And if he has to move his shop? The panels can move right along with him.

Lumber storage solutions by Andy Beasley

The centerpiece of Andy Beasley’s lumber storage system is a horizontal rack along one wall of his shop. Combined with shopmade carts and a rack for sheet goods, Beasley’s system allows him to store a lot of heavy material while taking up little space. Following the step-by-step instructions, readers will be able to customize an efficient system that will help turn a chaotic shop into an efficient one.

Efficient glue-ups with a rolling clamp rack by John Barrett

This rolling rack holds Barrett’s most commonly used clamps and tools for glue-ups. The rack is built around a box made from 3⁄4-in.-thick MDF, which provides great strength and extra storage space.

More staff picks: All time favorite tool storage of all time

Tool chests and toolboxes hold a special place in the hearts of many woodworkers. They not only keep your tools organized, they also keep them safe from dust and moisture. Every woodworker is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to storing your tools.

We assembled a collection of 10 of our favorites that have been featured in the magazine. Maybe one suits your needs perfectly, or maybe you’ll find that your own setup is still your favorite.

Thank you Anissa for pulling all of this together. I like to go out to the FWW site daily. I get excited when I see new content. This was a nice collage of interesting material. Plus, they had hyper links to the original articles. How cool is that!

Great article and I especially like the clamp rack. Also a great series of other good articles. However, none of the articles provide plans or advice for the wall stretcher I desperately need.
