    Pine Bottom Chest

By rdiaz, member Oct 01, 2008
    Article Image

This small blanket chest is based on an original design from the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. The box is made from single cherry boards with half-blind dovetails and a beveled pine bottom. A friend looked inside and wondered if the bottom was plywood, thus the name. The dovetailed bracket base is topped with mitered ogee molding. The breadboard top is also from a single board, constructed with pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery. The thumbnail edging was cut directly into the top. The chest is fitted with extruded brass hinges and a Brusso lid stay, and finished with Tried & True varnish oil and Butcher’s amber paste wax.

dimensions: 27-1/2 in. by 12-7/8 in. by 13-3/4 in. tall

A beautiful piece of work and a beautiful gift. A classic design you have interpreted with great care and skill. Very, very well done!

Very nice indeed. My daughter has asked me to make her a blanket box / hope chest similar to this. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to go out and start making it. Thanks for sharing this project with us.
