    Gentleman’s Tool Chest

An avid tool collector builds a chest for his favorite antique tools based on The Gent's tool chest, originally sold by Hammacher Schlemmer.

Author Headshot By Rick Long #279-Tools & Shops 2020 Issue
    tool chest and bench

Synopsis: The Gent’s tool chest, originally sold by Hammacher Schlemmer and designed by Theodore Doegler, looks like a handsome chest of drawers when closed. When open, it reveals specialized storage for hundreds of tools, plus a workbench and two vises. Rick Long built one like it to showcase his collection of antique tools, gathered over a lifetime of woodworking.

Like most woodworkers, hobbyist to professional, I’ve spent almost all of my shop time making pieces for others over the years. But a few years ago, after three decades as a woodshop teacher outside Richmond, Va., and having recently become an empty nester with newfound free time, I decided to create a piece just for me, to represent my passion for collecting antique woodworking tools.

Most of us remember an issue of Fine Woodworking from July/August 1988 when the back cover of the magazine featured an awe-inspiring object: H.O.…

Oh my. This is beautiful. I too have wanted to bring hand tool work into the house but have not yet found a solution that made my wife happy. This will solve the problem and I know where it would easily fit. Do you have any plans with dimensions? I'm a woodworker so I can figure out most of it. Any plans, however rough would be helpful. I'd be happy if someone had a link to plans available for purchase. Thanks!

Outside of the vintage vise used in this build, is there any other commercial vise I could use that detaches so easily? To get the front of the cabinet clean so it can close, I don't think I could get by with an Eclipse vise.

Reminds me of Roentgen furniture, with all those drawers, fold-outs and what not. Just needs some brass and gold leaf with marquetry to give it that Roentgen look :) It's very nice, thumbs up.

My name is Richard roy. I would also be interested in buying the plans. For the same reasons as M.joeleonetti, I think I could build this myself too. Who can I contact in order to buy the plans?

      Dear All,
There is another article online that takes you through a tour of the workbench and it provides a link to plans through Lee Valley. With all due respect, it would have been nice if FWW had indicated as such in the article. Copying link to the other FWW article as well as the link to Lee Valley that I copied from the person who posted it in that other article.

Lee Valley have sold plans to make this bench for a few years now.

Sir, Apparently you did not buy the original, so how much was the original $$

      Great workmanship sir. Ralph

Just to provide an update. The plan from Lee Valley arrived. It is very detailed. I will have no problem building this piece from this plan and consider myself a beginner. Also, I will be making it with only hand tools and don't see any major challenges in doing so other than a bit more sweat and time.

These plans also include a part number to a Lee Valley vise (one based off of some sort of pipe clamp) so that the front of the vise easily comes off when the unit is closed up.

Additionally, my wife likes the design (unlike a normal workbench) so being able to keep one inside the nice air conditioned house for summer work won't be a problem.

Sir, actually I was looking for the price of the original Gent's tool chest the was at the auction, the inspired Mr. Long. Thanks for your info. I will have to take measurements to see if my beneficiaries can get it through the door, I hope they know it can be disassembled. Ralph
