Nothing exemplifies the quality of an accomplished and experienced woodworker better than the full command of handplanes. In this online video class, teacher and furniture maker Mike Pekovich leads you on the journey toward a mastery of handplanes.

In this episode Mike shows how you can overcome one of the most frustrating aspects of handplaning: grain tearout. Mike will talk about grain direction and how it can cause tearout if you’re not careful. He also gives some tips on how to plane tricky areas without tearing up the surface.

Thank you for making these videos. I am a beginner and I love the planes. I have read a quite a bit on the subject but this video format really brings it all together and gave me some points that I was not able to find by reading. Nice sharpening stone holder, can we get the plans?

    10. JKreider | Nov 27, 2016 07:37pm | #10

I really liked the video and the explanations. My only critique is that the grain direction on the boards was shown or stated. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!

Wow, Episode 2 was fantastic. I have looked everywhere(with moderate success) for a good explanation of why certain angles of bevels work best on certain types of grain. I am more efficient when understanding why something is done in addition to how something is done. Thank you Mike and FW. I look forward to the other episodes.
